In Defense of Religion
There were many talks about religion in the net especially just recently when a writer of a site I would not be mentioning coined religion “as an underwater blowjob” and wanted to eradicate religion even by violent means for the author says, the Christian fundamentalists could not debate with him in a very logical manner. Whatever he means by that.
I wanted to asked him if he could possibly debate with me as to the reason why the Earth is round and moves in a circular motion, on a period that is fairly exact every time and why a sperm cell of so long ago became him the person. Maybe, he had some logical explanation why he should be thankful that his parents were benefited by a religious wedding ceremony that he had grown up towards this present day were he could still find the time and resources to do blogging while many do not even have food on their table. I bet my house and car, if I had any, that he could not debate these matters to me in a logical manner. I say, he was to overarching to presume that anything that could be believed should be capable of self-explanation when in fact there are so many things we believe in this world even though we could not logically explain them or define them, like for example that we know the sun will come up again over the horizon by tomorrow morning, although we could not explain why exactly this is so.
I did not asked him the question I mentioned above but I have retorted to the atheistic writer that if without religion, he would most probably have not been here at all, for humanity may not have survived this far if men in the past had not come towards the embrace of religion and may perhaps have killed and maimed each other for nothing would be sacred anymore, and every act, like murder and stealing would have been the norm instead of the exception. Humanity would self-destruct without the aid of religion.
What is religion? In ordinary parlance, as well as the dictionary definition, religion would be known as a whole body of beliefs and norms that is mostly centered on a god image that becomes the central point of the whole body of norms and ethics. Religion is not only Christianity or Islam, even our obedience to the laws of the land, like for example to the constitution of our country, is by itself a form of religion. The belief in a certain fraternity code of ethics or a civic organization’s credo also partakes that of a belief system that simulates a “religion” as we ordinarily know it.
Perhaps, it is the kind of Christian or Islam religion that many speak at times in the cruelest of manner. They say, religion is a pest. A sort of narcotic or some sort of opium. Something that is superfluous and irrelevant to the present world. A pain in the ass. A disturbance to personal lives. These people do not get it at all and they are ingratiates.
We know that many known thinkers of the modern era have been the worst critic of religion and they became famous for lambasting faith and many of our youngsters idolized them for their intelligence, becoming proud that they read this modern philosopher that and modern philosopher this. If you examine the lives of this modern thinkers, you would be opening Pandora boxes for they live in shambles and utter desperation that they either die of suicides or die of a despicable sickness. They become depressed and isolated and do not even go out in the open and speak to people like ordinary people do. They become hermitic and afraid to go out to the world. Why then that we must believe them when in fact, if we examine the lives they live, they all seem to have been afraid of their own shadows. They all lived tragic lives that are surrounded by adultery, alcoholism, murder, psychotic tendencies, fraud, and mortal sickness that ate them in the flesh.
We all know these kind of modern thinkers---they grow old seemingly alone, and die at their bed without anyone at their side and perhaps, they would still be screaming against religion the moment the air was gotten out of their breathe and they themselves could not explain why these things happen, why there is death, and wondered if there would be life after this mortal existence.
Virgil, he famous Roman poet, was said to be the first of the atheist who have openly dispute the veracity of God and yet at his death bed, he had remarked that if he could turn back time, he would have made peace with God. Perhaps, at the point of death, even his brightest of mind could not explain why in the end, he longs for something that only a god could possibly give him but he has no god to ask for it.
Why do they speak of religion in the darkest of manner? Did religion brought havoc to their lives that they have hated it so much? Have religion harmed them or destroyed them?
The only cause or reason perhaps why they hate religion is maybe because their consciences are disturbing them so harshly; disturbing their peace for their mortal acts make them feel so heavy with despair and they blame religion for the heaviness in their consciences. Let us remember that conscience is not an invention or imposition of any religion. It is a feeling or sentiment that is already in us when we were born. That heavy feeling every time we commit wrong is something that exists already as a nature of man and yet, we could not explain why this is so this in a “logical manner”.
Do not kid me when you say Sigmund Freud could explain it to me with all those id and ego and super ego thing that made him famous, for I tell you frankly, he has no proof whatsoever to this effect, and I say, he does not explain these to me in a logical and concrete manner. What does Nietsze say about the conscience are nothing but some mental masturbation, that he presents no concrete proof also. It would be unfair to ask concrete proofs from our preachers on the existence and veracity of God when guys like Friedrich Nietzsche could not themselves bring forth sufficient and concrete evidences to support their claim. Nietzsche presented an idealogue that became the root of the monumental Hitlerian murderous rampage; and yet at the end of it all, he had exclaimed that "Only God can saves us now".And if they were true to their words, I would not want to be like them who have become so high and mighty with fame, that they have become hermits and isolated from the society.
Are they the ones to teach us how to live life in a more sublime manner? Examine their lives. They may be famous that they have squandered happiness with their strange minds. And look at the preacher and lay ministers, they are easy to laugh and sing. Who do you think are the more benefited in this life? Thinkers may be more famous but even Satan is just famous for having nothing to write about as a principle of living. They may be moneyed but money has not made these thinkers happier than any of us.
Probably many hated religion because it is a stumbling block to their pursuit of excessive pleasures and indecent form of happiness. They want to wallow in sexual perversions and yet they do not see that there are many concrete and “logical” proofs that sexual excessiveness brings forth diseases of the most lurid kind and affects the society in the gravest of manner by causing many social evils like rape, incest, parentless children, AIDS, STDs, sexual harassment in the workplace, depressions and psychosis, suicides, murder, stealing in the government treasury in order to fund their exploits, pedophiles, abuse of domestic helpers, destroyed lives, broken families, battery, drug addiction, alcoholism and many other malefactions that we could not enumerate them all even if we go on with this from night till dawn.
Why hate religion when in fact it had offered and presented mankind with tons of benefits and good things. It has brought us more goodness than we could ever know. It may not have prevented the onset of killings in the world but at least, it has prevented more and more killings by discouraging murder. It would be stupid to expect that killing in this world would be tempered down to a complete zero. The Ten Commandments may not have stopped stealing but if without the influence of religion, many more might have stolen that men would be killing each other to protect their lives and properties.
Religion ha s given us many beautiful and important insights in life as well as guidelines that bring us stability in life and peace of mind.
Let us remember that many of our laws today emanated from divine laws. If the government would not have prohibited killing and stealing, I do not think anyone of us could easily walk the downtown street so safely. That writer in the other blogsite, would not have been able to blog if anyone is not prevented from just entering his premises and take away his computer or possibly his life.
He does not realize that probably, his mom and dad were wed through the benefit of a religious ceremony. Isn’t he glad that he wasn’t a seed of some irresponsible sexual act? If we had no religion, he would have been a bastard, a son of some guy who was prone of “underwater blowjobs” and not supported through elementary and college by that “blowjob” addict.
They castigate so much the things religion could offer them when in fact their good lives now are the result of the influence of morality and faith in righteousness. That writer would not have known who were his father and his siblings might have been many and yet he do not know them. Religion supports and creates good foundations for living and good relationships among family members as well as among the individuals in the society. I wanted him to explain to me in a logical manner why religion has benefited him by having his parents wedded in a religious ceremony?
Religion promotes loving and caring among individuals and why is it such a bad thing for him? It promotes, responsibility, cordiality, charity, care for the sick and dying, respect for women. It urges us to avoid the things that would harm us like gluttony, slothfulness, being overly envious and prideful, murder and stealing, sexual perversion, drug addiction, lying and cheating, and many other malicious acts. You could even shout to the world “Thank God for religion!” knowing that he was saved by religion from a life of wantonness and instability.
The writer hated religion because he said many individuals sells religion by peddling handkerchiefs and collecting money from people in the buses. What lack of insight he had to think that religion is composed mainly and solely by this sort of people, granting that these individuals are doing the wrong things. Religion has been here for more centuries that we could count by the fingers in both our hands and feet, even before the coming of Jesus Christ, and simply stated, the ones commercializing religion does not made up or consist of religion itself. What shallowness in thinking. He must have forgotten the many saints and martyrs who have fought and died for the cause of religion even without any pecuniary interest. He forgets the catholic priest from the nearby chapel who greets the morning sun with so much gusto and glee or from his sons’ school who does not sell kerchiefs and peddle faith in public transports.
Religion may be corny and at many times its ways and means seem to be outmoded and silly but what substitute do we have for religion? Throughout the centuries, religion was caused to exist in order to hasten the civilization of the human specie and leads them towards a more orderly and less chaotic existence. It had helped mankind to structure the lives we all live, to bring a workable system where individuals are urged to do good things for the betterment of human lives and avoid the things that harms and denigrate human existence.
Probably, he had desired all our daughters to give “underground blowjobs” to men who would just leave them and talk about it in public. If we all become like this man who speaks religion in such a destitute manner, and yet acts like he doesn’t know how to respect the women in his lives, I would take up arms and put these rats and scoundrels under control, and they will be thankful I believe in religion.
